Overwhelming, powerful, harrowing experience.
Alice
A powerful story, touching and empathetic. Had a large impact on me emotionally. Most people, if not all, will be affected as well. Will impact everyone who reads it.
Patricia
Very effective at describing the immense pain a smoker goes through when suffering of lung cancer. Its brutality is not for someone who has lost a loved one to lung cancer.

Basic SEO, using meta tags for SERP

March 25, 2007

Having been an editor at one time reviewing websites, I often review the source code to many of the sites I visit. It surprises me to find how many websites fail to use meta tags to help boost thier search engine placement.

Ok, so meta tags do not weigh heavely in the sceem of things when it come to search engines, however they are used, and they do play an important part in displaying your site content.

Almost all search engines use the meta tag for description. <meta content="A brief description of your web content. On the average the first 60 charactures including spaces are used by search engines to describe your website." name="description"/>

The words you place in your meta tag for the description should be used in the content of your website. Perferably in both the header and the footer, but in the header for sure. A website for flower pots would look something like this.

In the source code you would have:

<title>Flower Pots</title>

<meta content="Flower Pots - A website devoted to making flower pots." name="description"/>

Then the header on your entrance page should look like this:

Flower Pots

A website devoted to making flower pots.

It is simple, clean, and goes back to the basics of k.i.s.s., and searchbots love simple.

In the next article we will expound on meta tags and simple html tags to use in the header block of your source code that will help in search engine placement.

Return of the Swallows

The Return of the Swallows

There are many of you that know I live in San Juan Capistrano, California and today was the Swallows Day Parade. The fame of this event has reached all parts of the world. It is no wonder why this is todays topic. It is a wonderful time of year that brings many tourist to our community. And, in case you do not know about The Incredible Flight of the Swallows this is a short and interesting story.

The first link is a site that lists lists several community links with a lot of information on the Mission San Juan Capistrano, Shopping Guild, Dinning, as well as Tourist Information.

Here is another site featuring what is know as the Swallowfest. This site has some wonderful pictures with a schedule of events and activities in our neck of the woods. Being a tourist haven, we have several events during the year. The only draw back for the locals, is the closing of the streets. A minor discomfort compared to seeing the smiles on all the faces walking through town.

Lastly, our Community and Visitors Guild for anyone interested in visiting us in the future.

Share with us and tell us about the community you live in. There is something special about every community that people would like to read about.

Blogs, and Bloggers, and Directories Oh My!

March 21, 2007

Having once been an editor at Dmoz.org it is seldom I find a directory I find worth talking about, especially with all the free directory scripts available on the Internet. At times it seems every armature web developer goes through a phase of running a directory, myself included. These directories are difficult to maintain, and most fall to the wayside quickly. Not only that, these directories all look the same, mainly because the people running them are all using the same free script.

In my opinion there are only two directories worth while and they are dir.yahoo.com, and of course dmoz.org. However, every once in a long while I come across a directory that I like and Bloghits happens to be one of them.

What is it about this directory that sets it apart from the countless blog directories on the Internet that I like?

One, no ads on the front entrance page. Wow, what a relief that is to see in an age where every blogger seems to believe that monetizing there blog is going to make them rich. But, having no ads on the entrance page is not what I really like about this site and inspired me to write this. What inspired me is the directory, and the structure of the directory, and that is really what caught my attention.

First thing I noticed, this directory is focused, and that focus is Blogs. The second thing I noticed was the categories and sub-categories. These have been well thought out with one of the most extensive sub-category listings I have seen. There is a sub-category for just about any blog you can think of.

The Bloghits directory is human edited, which in its self is not that unusual, however, these folks are on the ball and review sites in one or two days. They offer feature listings for a reasonable fee of $1.99, regular listing for free, which I assume does not link back, and free reciprocal linking with link back. I used the free reciprocal linking services, and they listed my site in one day! Heck, for 2 bucks I will probably go back and get a feature listing.

Bloghits also has a Add Category only there is no page related to that link. They do have a Contact Us page that I would use if you feel there is a need for a new category. By the quick attention and services I have experience, Bloghits would more than likely have that category up and running in no time.

Lastly, this directory is fairly new on the Internet scene and they seem to be off to a really good start in their endeavor. Listed below are some stats on Bloghits.

New Age Library

New Age Library - A blog source for new age information.

Now I have to be honest, I am not sure what, "New Age" really means. I suppose those words can mean a variety of things depending on who you asked, so I asked, "Ms. Webster."

New Age

–noun
1. of or pertaining to a movement espousing a broad range of philosophies and practices traditionally viewed as occult, metaphysical, or paranormal.
2. of or pertaining to an unintrusive style of music using both acoustic and electronic instruments and drawing on classical music, jazz, and rock.
3. the New Age movement.

This blog fits well into the first definition,  with "A broad range of philosophies," and I will add, "Personal View or thinking."

New Age Library has a variety of articles, mostly geared towards spirituality with resources for the following:

Articles of interest include:

Our Guardian Angels, are they there?
serpent : what is its true symbolism?
indigo children, indigo adults and the crystal children

With some interesting links that included the following:
